Community Climate Action Plan, Penicuik and Damhead

Case StudiesStrategy & Development

Midlothian Voluntary Action (part of the Midlothian Third Sector Interface) received funding from National Lottery’s “Together for Our Planet” programme to build a Community Climate Action Plan that supports the implementation of 20 Minute Neighbourhoods. MVA chose two very different communities, Penicuik and Damhead, to use as a test bed for the process of creating a community-led climate action plan.

Work undertaken

SKS’s work focused on engaging with people who were already involved in the climate conversations and, most importantly, those that weren’t, facilitating discussions around what the climate crisis means to them on a local level and how they can tackle it.

SKS organised and facilitate a wide-reaching survey, community engagement events and activities to maximise participation.

Output

  • A community climate action plan for each community that contains objectives that are relevant to their needs, wants, and capacity
  • A summary of the discussions from the community engagement events, capturing the issues raised, how action could be taken forward.
  • An assessment of what a 20-minute neighbourhood means for the community
  • Mapping ongoing climate activities that are being undertaken in the communities
  • Identified funding opportunities to support climate action
